I love explaining this to people. Again banks main operation is to make massive amounts of money from their customers. That’s you. So here we go:

First, you open a bank account with them. It can be any one of their accounts.
Second, you make deposits (let them keep your money)
Third, they pool together a percentage of several customer’s deposits and lend it to another customer.
Fourth, that customer has to pay back the money with interest.
Fifth, when that customer repay the money, that money will be lent to another customer and so forth

It is up to you to provide the most protection for your accounts and you need to do it. Long past the days when robbers had to go to a bank to rob it. Nowadays they can get a hold of your personal information and rob your banking accounts.

Here’s how you can protect yourself

Do not give out your banking information such as your account number and routing numbers
Don’t carry your debit cards and ATM cards around. Take them with you only when you are going to use it.
Keep all your blank checks as well as your returned checks in a safe secured location in your home.
When you give your bank card to pay for something don’t let them take it out of your eye sight. You don’t want them to be able to steal information from it.
Read your monthly statement very carefully. Check to see that you authorize every transaction on there.
Check your accounts often. The best way to do this is to sign up for online banking. You will be able to see any unusual activities.
Contact your bank immediately if you suspect your account is being compromised.
Don’t carry around personal information such as your social security card and birth certificates.
Don’t check your accounts on other people computers or public computers. If you do make sure to log out and clear your history browsing.
