After one year of living in that apartment we leased a very nice two story house in a very nice neighborhood. However, in February of 2005 my husband and I both became unemployed.
That September, we were evicted from our house.
I was so devastated. Our only son had just started the 12th grade. I was completely upset as to how we had handled our money when we had been blessed by God to have such great jobs and great salaries. Although we didn't live above our mean we didn't take the time to manage our money properly. Well one day it caught up with us.
While I was still being grateful for a roof over our head, I began to evaluate our financial situation a lot closer. I've always been interested in financial planning and money management things. I often created a budget for our household, but I couldn't seem to keep up with it, because of so many unforeseen financial crisis. Our car would often break down. We would take our bill money and get the car fixed. These type of episodes were happening so regular, we couldn't get a handle on our finances.
My husband thought about filing for bankruptcy again, but decided that wouldn't fix what really ailed us. My husband had filed bankruptcy several years ago and it was only a temporary fix. Before long we were back in another financial crisis.
One day while evaluating our financial issues, I decided it was time to do something about it.
So I set out to do an investigation into how to fix our financial situation.
Well, 6 months after moving into that little small two bedroom apartment, we moved again into a very nice two story townhouse. We have put a financial plan in order.
Most of our financial goals have not been achieved, but that's fine, because we are staying within our budget. Sometimes we have to make adjustments to the budget month by month.
Although we have not reached all of our financial goals, we believe we are where we should be after such a hard struggle 5 years ago.
Well to make a long story short. I practiced what I had learned and decided to share it with others.
I have been instructing financial education seminars and workshops every since.
Since then, I've written several basic financial tutorials . I placed in them everything I've learned during the course of getting our financial life situated.
And guess what (at the time of this writing)? My husband got laid off his job again, but is now working part-time. But we will be okay, because I have learned how to live below our means.
Everyday brings new challenges, but with personal financial knowledge, a budget and frugal living, we can overcome it.
